Sharapova's hearing was apparently catastrophic. The head of the Russian tennis federation sad in a press statement that she's likely never to play again, and that she might actually just announce her retirement before sentencing.

This is the first Slam he'll miss in about a century and a half. It would be really shitty if, after years spent gliding around the tennis court seemingly immune to fatigue and physical issues, it is an injury of this sort to put him out of commission for good.

It would, but it almost seems inevitable. Healthy, he's still the only guy regularly testing Novak. He reached two Slam finals last year. Why else would he stop?

I think he probably saw the writing on the wall regarding Roland Garros and decided to focus on Wimbledon. I'm kind of surprised he even gave an effort to the clay season this year.

As obsessed as he is about his own mythology, I think at this point he's more about focusing on single events where he thinks he's got a shot. I happen to think the US Open is the Slam where he can be the most competitive, but he clearly believes it's Wimbledon.

Draw's out. Nadal's got Fognini in the 3rd round, the worst possible round of 16 (Thiem) and Djokovic in the semis. Djokovic got another easy draw - he opens against Lu, gets the winner of two qualifiers in Round 2, then Delbonis, Bautista-Agut, and Berdych. Seriously.

Serena and Azarenka are slated to meet in the quarters. The draw goods have been cruel to Vika.

Other notes:

Cuevas is Berdych's Round of 32. He might be a more formidable quarterfinal for Djokovic. Ferrer could also be his quarterfinal.

Gasquet and Kyrgios are a potential 3rd round. Winner likely gets Nishikori. Winner likely gets Murray, who has a pretty easy draw until then.

Dimitrov, who is unseeded, gets Troicki in the 1st round. Coric plays Fritz. Delciano plays Steve Johnson, who I think is the highest ranked unseeded player.

The seeds in one eighth of the draw are Raonic, Cilic, Sock and Pouille. Opportunities abound.
