RE: Official MODERN FAMILY, Season 6 Thread
Gotcha. I think a lot of teasing as far as Alex's looks were concerned came from her sister, so it could have been attributed to Haley's shallowness rather than taken as a commentary on Alex as a character. But I do get where you're coming from.
I went and checked who wrote 'Bad Moon Rising', and it was two men. Duh. And yes, a character like Ross would get rightfully flayed alive today. But I've discussed ad nauseam how poorly 'Friends' has aged in general. I guess that's a good thing. |

RE: Official MODERN FAMILY, Season 6 Thread
I don't know. I think the Ray/Debra relationship is one that seems to be discussed as pretty problematic whenever I read about the show. Or used to read about it on message boards when it was on. One of the main criticisms I always remember reading of that show was how the family all seemed to loathe each other. It doesn't seem to garner much attention these days in syndication.
I don't think Mitch and Cam really work, most of the time. They do seem to be utterly annoyed by the other's personality traits regularly and very rarely seem to do anything that shows how they love/like each other. Even Ray and Debra were given moments throughout that show's run. Does the show face a little more criticism because it is a gay couple they are portraying, and the has been kind of flaunted as huge progress? Possibly. But that makes sense since, as a couple, Mitch and Cam don't really represent much of a step forward in terms of gay characters. They often seem like roommates who are on the verge of finding new people to live with, not two people who are actually in love. Or in like. But I don't find Jay and Gloria to be much better, honestly. They just get typical old man/young hot woman jokes. But the writers still attempt to give them storylines occasionally where they seem romantic/in love. I think that Claire and Phil are the one couple that actually seems like a couple. And, even then, I'd say there are hints of a Ray/Debra dynamic there most of the time. But as characters, they still seem more believable as a couple - and I also think Bowen and Burell have terrific chemistry. I wish they would actually allow more storylines of the two working together instead of being antagonistic. Also, I completely disagree about Friends aging poorly, but that's for another thread. |

I think what's ultimately great about the Alex character is that ultimately she doesn't let it change who she is and wants to be. It's hard and maybe even impossible to know how much is the show having changed and how much is people being used to and tired of the traits of the show's characters. To me it's like how in any long-term relationships some things you find "cute" or tolerable early on can become grating a few years down the road. I'd also contend that in general, there are a lot of couples that sort of bicker and prod after years of being together. One could argue the show reflects that, which is separate from whether people want to watch that get displayed. |

Eventually we will all just be talking in circles because ultimately what is irritating to some won't be irritating to others. All that said, this week's with the Apple technology was fantastic and would be a good tape for Bowen.
dug, I am all for starting a "Friends" thread. With it being on Netflix, I think it's still ripe for discussion. |

Watched this season's Valentine's Day episode. Mostly ho-hum, except for Phil and Claire. Their Valentine's Day stuff is usually the strongest, but it looks like that may be retired - which is probably a good thing. And it had a really funny, cute ending, too.
It was also another great episode for Bowen. I wouldn't be surprised if she takes another Emmy this year. |

RE: Official MODERN FAMILY, Season 6 Thread
I've been one of those who has liked Modern Family all along and thought it has mostly deserved its Emmy victories, but I think this season has been pretty disappointing. I just don't think the episodes have been all that funny, and there also hasn't been enough interaction between the various families, as too many episodes seem to fall into a Jay/Gloria/Manny plot, a Mitch/Cam plot and a Dunphy plots, all of which are isolated. There still have some moments, and some good episodes (the best this season was the one when Haley turned 21), but I have to agree the magic seems to be off it right now.

Some details on how they created this past week's episode that also provides Alex's college essay:

Catching up on the show, and Nathan Lane's performance is probably my favorite of his on the show. Loved his shock at mishearing the team name, Blackhawks.

I found Lane to be annoying and very cliche in 1st appearance or two, but he's been extremely funny in the more recent ones.
