RE: Random TV Thoughts
Game of Thrones is in a league of its own obviously, but there's also Ballers, Silicon Valley, Girls, and Veep. And Last Week Tonight, Real Time, and Vice. And the documentaries. And Hard Knocks. And, you know, the movies. The Night Of, I will tell you now, has True Detective-like potential (Season 1!). Don't know much about Vice Principals, but Eastbound and Down was actually quite successful, even if none of us here ever watched it. Bill Simmons, the Vice daily show, and Jon Stewart's project are, I think, in many ways designed to create year-round engagement.
We are obviously in a different era now, but the network did fine in the period in between The Sopranos and True Blood. Even with the first few years of the latter, the programming seemed a little thin until Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones came along. The recession was brutal at that time...but the network did fine. |
