RE: Random Film Thoughts: You've Been Blackballed
I'm mixed on it. Maybe I'm not a Nolan fanboy, since I don't like some of his films, but I do consider him among our best directors working today. Parts of this are very successful - the music building dread signaling incoming planes, the occasional swell of patriotism and respect for the heroes and obviously, the stunning cinematography. There are also things I respect, like his attempt to make similar-looking characters represent the (at times literal) sea of men and his lack of dialogue, focusing on the visceral. But others didn't work - the music in moments where it drowns out everything happening in a scene, the middle portion of the film dragging a bit as our bearings aren't really clear, and frankly, a general sense that bombastic is more important in some scenes than what is actually happening. The ending is stellar. No complaints about the cast. Not a masterpiece for me though, and my top three Nolans remain the same, though this is certainly covering serious territory more than he has previously. The blue hairs in the Academy will be split - some will like the war message but it will still be too bombastic for some. He could miss Director again. It would be like the Academy to finally reward him for something serious that didn't work for me as well as some of his "popcorn films."
