a) I can understand why you feel it forces him to comment on his sexuality, but it doesn't inherently have to. I know that sounds stupid because of our current cultural moment, but prioritizing films (art) about marginalized communities made by members of those communities is important and I'm puzzled that you're minimizing that.
b) Milk and Carol both had queer writers and directors. Moonlight and Call Me By Your Name had queer screenwriters. But no, that doesn't mean those films are better artistic achievements than one that doesn't. But do I feel that Moonlight, which is about queer black youth written by a queer black male, has more value beyond the artistic because of that? Yes, I kinda do. For a different example, do I think Black Panther (or Crazy Rich Asians) has more value beyond the artistic for it's representation? Yep. c) The line? That's up to you and every other viewer. d) Yes, I agree that forcing anyone to out themselves is inappropriate. |
