RE: Random Film Thoughts: You've Been Blackballed
I'm really torn on Plattgate. On one hand, it's great for musical theatre and Broadway when the originator does the film and isn't replaced by a movie star. However, he was already borderline too old towards the end of his stage run - and that's sitting far away in the audience - and he naturally looks older than his age despite the baby face. He is only three years older than Kaitlyn Dever, who I think successfully looks high school age. To have him reprise his Tony-winning performance on film is only going to enhance interest in the stage show at a unique moment when theatre needs as much interest as it can get, and it's going to enable future generations to see what the fuss was about with regards to him in that role.
HOWEVER, those who are not huge "DEH" fans point to how creepy Evan Hansen's lie is (not a spoiler if it's in the trailer) and having him look so much older than everybody else is only going to add fuel to the fire if you come in with the belief that Evan is a sociopath. Him looking like a middle-aged man trolling his alma mater for jailbait isn't exactly going to help him seem sympathetic. (Btw, Twitter was a gift the other day when the trailer dropped and everyone came to the realization the story isn't about a gay boy who breaks his arm.) It's kind of like as blessed as I felt that they cast the majority of the original cast in the "Rent" movie to have those performances preserved on film, they all came off as spoiled brats because they're 40 and complaining about having to pay rent. I am obviously seeing this and am obviously one of the target demographics so my opinion largely makes no difference but these are my thoughts! |
