As we discuss how certain interviews endear us to Dressel and others, it points out that doing media does build a connection with the audience and bring attention to athletes and their sport. That doesn't mean someone like Osaka should forsake her mental health, I am just saying there is a benefit to interviews. |

Re: rhythmic gymnastics:
It is mind-bogglingly hilarious that Russia, of all fucking countries, is bitching about cheating and biased judging. Have one million seats, you shitheads. After the gymnasts in artistic gymnastics were so supportive of each other and enthusiastically cheered each other, it's too bad that the Russian twin who won silver is acting like an entitled asshole. She apparently had a huge mistake during her ball routine, and it actually was more costly than Ashram's dropped ribbon. It seemed like the rest of the gymnasts were very excited for Ashram, so it really stood out starkly as major sour grapes. But seriously, fuck you, Russia. Your athletes shouldn't even be competing. |

RE: Tokyo Olympics - The 2020/2021 Summer Games
The two 4x400 relays were phenomenal. I love Allyson Felix so much and am so happy she passed Carl Lewis in the medal count, and that foursome of American women is a pantheon of greatness. Also, how completely stunning are all four of them? My goodness. I'm also thrilled for the men, particularly Rai Benjamin and Michael Norman.
I was rooting for France in the gold-medal basketball game; for some reason, I can't warm up to our team and kind of wanted to see a different country win. However, I was thrilled for our women's team. The men's 10m platform final was fabulous. It speaks to the incredible quality of diving that Yang Jian received the highest ever diving score in the Olympics and still came up just short of Cao Yuan who pulled out a nearly perfect dive when he absolutely needed it for gold. And yay for Tom Daley! |

And with our women's indoor volleyball gold (SOOOOOO happy for those women!!!), the US officially secured the most golds won, winning eight golds in the final two days to overtake China by one. As is so often the case of late, we can thank our women for this since they won six of those eight golds and twenty-three of the thirty-nine total.

Marcin Urbas demanding that Mboma take a gender conformation test because she ran faster than he did at 18 is world class clownery. The WA regulations on XY DSD athletes are just poorly concealed nonsensical transphobia.

Johnny Weir's insistence on calling Terry Gannon "Terrance" makes me want to stab him in the face. I HATE it.

Just like with Biles, where it was also tinged with racism, Twitter once again feels like its place to weigh in on events they have no knowledge of. Does anyone complaining watch rhythmic gymnastics or know anything about rhythmic gymnastics? It's not my sport and I didn't see this competition but the gymnastics experts are saying that this is a Code of Points issue as well. There are different penalties for drops depending what part of the routine they happen in, and therefore Ashram's wasn't that costly since it wasn't on a skill. Complain about the COP all you want, that's fine. But it reeks of anti-Semitism and the current anti-Israel sentiment (justified or not...not getting into Middle Eastern politics here; Ashram is an individual person) that THIS is the event where suddenly rhythmic is fixed. Not all the other years where the Soviets literally paid off the judges. |
