(02-19-2023 09:48 AM)Culturegeek Wrote: Best Supporting Actor I keep seeing this about Gleeson and there's no way he's on par with Farrell in impact and screentime. Screen time data for The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) - Colin Farrell - 1:09:26 (60.96%) - Brendan Gleeson - 34:32 (30.32%) - Kerry Condon - 23:09 (20.32%) - Barry Keoghan - 13:50 (12.15%) I guess because he's the catalyst so he seems more impactful? This isn't category fraud to me. By contrast, Quan is in 42% of his movie and no one thinks his is a case of category fraud (Hsu has almost the same screentime percentage wise as Gleeson). I'm reading this and it's coming off as bitchy but I don't know how to change the "tone". I'm just wondering how Gleeson is the lead of his film. |

RE: Rank the Nominees
It's an interesting point. To be honest, I viewed the friendship/dissolution thereof to be the central plotline, but I can see a perspective that has Padraig more central given his relationship with Siobhan and Dominic. I'd want to rewatch it to see.

RE: Rank the Nominees
Best Picture
1. Everything Everywhere All at Once 2. The Banshees of Inisherin ----- 3. Top Gun: Maverick ----- 4. Triangle of Sadness ----- 5. Women Talking ----- Hi! I'm Pretentious. Tár ----- Who. All Quiet on the Western Front Fucking. The Fabelmans Cares. Elvis *No Thanks, Jimmy. Avatar: The Way of Water I love the top two, and I do think EEAaO is an incredible achievement on all fronts. #3 is classic and great Hollywood entertainment, but it's a testament to how much I didn't care for these nominees that the popcorn blockbuster is #3. I like a lot about #4, although I thought it kind of fell apart in the last half-hour or so; #5 was preachy and stagy but well-meaning with good performances; #6 cannot think more highly of itself; and the last three were all terrible in different ways. And I don't care how pretty it is, I refuse to spend money to see a movie (Avatar) I know I'm going to hate, so let's just assume it would be somewhere among my bottom three. Best Director 1. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert ----- 2. Martin McDonagh ----- 3. Ruben Östlund ----- 4. Todd Field ----- 5. Steven Spielberg The Daniels are so far ahead of the rest here, but I liked McDonagh's work a lot, appreciated what Östlund was going for (and that one scene – if you've seen the movie, you know what scene I'm talking about – made me laugh more than anything in recent memory), found Field's work just as self-satisfied as always, but thought there was at least some urgency to the proceedings unlike Spielberg's absolutely stultifying work. Best Actor 1. Colin Farrell 2. Paul Mescal ----- 3. Bill Nighy ----- The Comeback Kid. Brendan Fraser ----- Are You Fucking Kidding Me? Austin Butler The top two are both incredible, and Nighy has some lovely moments. However, as is almost always the case, the winner here will be one of my bottom two and likely the worst possible choice. Tale as old as fucking time with Best Actor. Best Actress Goddess. Michelle Yeoh ----- 2. Andrea Riseborough ----- Danielle Day-Lewis. Cate Blanchett ----- What The Fuck Are You Doing? Michelle Williams Marielena Monroe. Ana de Armas The only one who matters is Yeoh, although Riseborough was fantastic and completely deserving of her nomination. Blanchett wasn't terrible, just wildly overpraised, and the bottom two are totally interchangeable in their awfulness. Best Supporting Actor Goonies Never Say Die! Ke Huy Quan 2. Barry Keoghan 3. Brendan Gleeson 4. Brian Tyree Henry ----- Death By A Thousand Clichés. Judd Hirsch I love all of the top four, although Quan is my solid favorite, and there were about 137 other actors who should've had Hirsch's slot. Best Supporting Actress 1. Stephanie Hsu 2. Kerry Condon 3. Angela Bassett 4. Jamie Lee Curtis ----- 5. Hong Chau This is the one category in which I at least like all the nominees. Hsu is a comfortable favorite, but I loved Condon's, Bassett's, and Curtis's work and am rooting for Bassett. I liked Chau's work, although she was fighting against the current of a cruel, stagy script. |

RE: Rank the Nominees
Best Picture
1. The Holdovers (love) 2. Barbie 3. Anatomy of a Fall 4. Oppenheimer 5. Killers of the Flower Moon ----------------------------- 6. Past Lives (like very much) 7. American Fiction ----------------------------- 8. Poor Things (respect, but didn't enjoy) 9. The Zone of Interest ----------------------------- 10. Maestro (hate) Overall, a very solid group. Best Director 1. Martin Scorsese (excellent) 2. Christopher Nolan 3. Justine Triet ----------------------------- 4. Jonathan Glazer (respect) 5. Yorgos Lanthimos Gerwig and Payne would have topped them all, but still a strong group. Best Actor 1. Paul Giamatti (love) 2. Cillian Murphy ------------------------ 3. Colman Domingo (like) 4. Jeffrey Wright ------------------------ 5. Bradley Cooper (hate) I really wish Cooper had fleshed out his character instead of relying on dramatic movements. I generally like him as an actor but not here. The rest are great. Best Actress 1. Sandra Huller (love) 2. Lily Gladstone 3. Emma Stone ------------------------ 4. Carey Mulligan (like) ------------------------ 5. Annette Bening (not a fan) Normally a huge Bening and Mulligan fan, so not happy to be rooting against them. Best Supporting Actor 1. Robert Downey, Jr. (love) 2. Ryan Gosling 3. Robert De Niro --------------------------- 4. Sterling K. Brown (like) --------------------------- 5. Mark Ruffalo (not a fan) Ruffalo's big swing was too much for me, but I respect that he really went for it. I wish both of the top two could win. Supporting Actress 1. Da'Vine Joy Randolph (love) 2. Danielle Brooks ------------------------ 3. Jodie Foster (like) 4. America Ferrera 5. Emily Blunt No bad picks, but still wish McAdams was here. Glad Blunt is finally a nominee. Best Original Screenplay 1. Anatomy of a Fall (love) 2. The Holdovers 3. Past Lives ------------------------- 4. May December (respect) ------------------------- 5. Maestro (hate) My issues with Maestro really begin with the screenplay. I hope Anatomy wins but any of the top three would be great choices. Best Adapted Screenplay 1. Barbie (love) ---------------------------- 2. American Fiction (like very much) 3. Oppenheimer ---------------------------- 4. Poor Things (not its strongest aspect) 5. The Zone of Interest Both Poor Things and Zone are more directorial achievements, while I have problems with their screenplays. I don't think Gerwig and Baumbach will win, but I would love it. |

RE: Rank the Nominees
Saw everything I plan to see (Killers of the Flower Moon and Color Purple don’t interest me. Scorsese murdered my interest in his overlong, bloated epics with The Irishman, which I saw despite every instinct telling me I’d hate it. All those instincts are telling me the same thing here and nothing I’ve read convinces me otherwise and everyone I spoke to affirmed my position. Fool me once… As for The Color Purple, I know the story, I’m not really into a musical retelling of it, and it annoys me when they use deceptive trailers. Plus, I don’t think either film is winning anything.)
Best Picture: 1. Poor Things 2. Anatomy of a Fall 3. The Holdovers 4. The Zone of Interest 5. Barbie 6. American Fiction 7. Past Lives 8. Oppenheimer 9. Maestro The top three are stellar, four through seven I really like, didn’t like eight and nine. Poor Things was a bit too long by a half hour, but otherwise really enjoyed. I wish All Of Us Strangers was here. Best Director 1. Lanthimos 2. Triet 3. Glazer 4. Nolan Best Actor 1. Giamatti 2. Wright 3. Domingo 4. Murphy 5. Cooper Wish Andrew Scott was here. Giamatti was the best of a lineup I feel lukewarm about, probably because they went biopic heavy this year and it’s probably my least favorite genre. Actress 1. Stone 2. Huller 3. Mulligan 4. Bening Stone just made Bella such a fascinating character and really committed with it. Huller was fantastic as well. Mulligan rose above the material. Bening didn’t disappear into the character the way Foster did for me. Supporting Actor 1. Brown 2. Gosling 3. Ruffalo 4. Downey Brown enlivened the film whenever he appeared onscreen. Like the others. Gosling and Ruffalo kind of go back and forth for me. Downey was fine, but he was mostly part of the framing device in the hearing that wore tiresome to me, so he’s fine, but I always got a little annoyed when he was around in the film. Supporting Actress 1. Randolph 2. Foster 3. Ferreira 4. Blunt Blunt feels like a coattail nominee for me. Ferrera is here for the speech, which is fine, it was a memorable zeitgeisty segment of the film, and people have been nominated for less. But Randolph was the heart of a film I really enjoyed and I feel like she’s been in the conversation several times before landing here, so I’m happy for her. Wish Pike, Foy or even Moore was here. |

RE: Rank the Nominees
Best Picture
Batshit Awesomeness. Poor Things ---------- 2. The Holdovers 3. Anatomy of a Fall 4. American Fiction 5. Barbie 6. Past Lives ---------- Not As Interesting As It Thinks. The Zone of Interest Not As Anything As It Thinks. Oppenheimer ---------- Please Don't Make Any More Films About Violent White Men, Marty. Killers of the Flower Moon ---------- You Make It So Easy To Hate You, Bradley. Maestro Poor Things is my comfortable favorite of the year, but I loved #2-#6. #7 and #8 meant well but made me roll my eyes, #9 was totally misguided, and watching Bradley Cooper blow himself was even more boring than I thought possible. Best Director 1. Yorgos Lanthimos ---------- 2. Justine Triet ---------- 3. Christopher Nolan ---------- Look What I Learned In Film School! Jonathan Glazer Thank You, I've Had Sufficient. Marin Scorsese #1 is beyond awesome, #2 is terrific, #3 is certainly talented at the technical aspects of filmmaking if not the emotional elements of it, and the last two were way too pleased with himself and tedious, respectively. Best Actor 1. Paul Giamatti 2. Jeffrey Wright ---------- 3. Cillian Murphy 4. Colman Domingo ---------- No, Gurl. Bradley Cooper The top two are both fantastic, the next two are completely one-note and completely over the top, respectively, and the last one just needs to stop. Best Actress Queen. Emma Stone ---------- 2. Sandra Hüller ---------- 3. Annette Bening ---------- 4. Lily Gladstone ---------- You Deserve So Much More. Carey Mulligan #1 just keeps getting better with age and works magic in her film, #2 is fantastic, I like #3 more than most, #4 is fine but in the wrong category, and even #5's prodigious talents could not overcome such a horrid script. Best Supporting Actor 1. Mark Ruffalo 2. Sterling K. Brown ---------- 3. Ryan Gosling ---------- 4. Robert Downey Jr. 5. Robert De Niro #1 was a totally ridiculous, hilarious blast, #2 was also such an energetic joy, #3 was having a blast, #4's talents were hamstrung by his film, and #5 was just boring. Best Supporting Actress 1. Da'Vine Joy Randolph 2. Jodie Foster ---------- 3. America Ferrera ---------- 4. Danielle Brooks 5. Emily Blunt The top two are both the hearts of their movies, #3 was really good, and the last two were shallow and completely forgettable, respectively. |
