Rank the Last Ten Winners!
I always loved doing this, and I don't think we did this last year with the site change. I'm going to rank the last ten winners in the top six categories, but feel free to rank as many as you want!
Best Picture 1. Birdman 2. Slumdog Millionaire 3. The Hurt Locker 4. Spotlight 5. Argo 6. No Country for Old Men 7. The Departed 8. The King's Speech 9. Twelve Years a Slave 10. The Artist I love the first seven, think the eighth is a fine, uninspired movie, and really didn't like the last two. Best Director 1. Alfonso Cuarón 2. Alejandro González Iñárritu #1 3. Danny Boyle 4. Kathryn Bigelow 5. Ang Lee 6. Alejandro González Iñárritu #2 7. Ethan and Joel Coen 8. Martin Scorsese 9. Michel Hazanavicius 666. Tom Hooper Aside from the last two, the latter of whom is possibly the worst win in this category ever, this list is fucking amazing. The top eight are all incredible. Best Actor 1. Sean Penn 2. Forest Whitaker 3. Jeff Bridges 4. Colin Firth 5. Leonardo DiCaprio 6. Matthew McConaughey 7. Eddie Redmayne 8. Daniel Day-Lewis #2 9. Daniel Day-Lewis #3 10. Jean Dujardin By contrast, this list sucks. I only really love the top two, think the next three are all good, and thought the sixth was fine. The last four... Best Actress 1. Natalie Portman 2. Brie Larson 3. Julianne Moore 4. Helen Mirren 5. Sandra Bullock 6. Jennifer Lawrence 7. Kate Winslet 8. Cate Blanchett 9. Marion Cotillard 10. Meryl Streep I find the first four transcendent, have great affection for the next two, don't like #7, and hate the last three. Best Supporting Actor 1. Heath Ledger 2. Christoph Waltz #1 3. Javier Bardem 4. Christoph Waltz #2 5. Christopher Plummer 6. J.K. Simmons 7. Jared Leto 8. Alan Arkin 9. Christian Bale 10. Mark Rylance The first six are incredible, the next two are fine, and the final two are awful. Best Supporting Actress 1. Mo'Nique 2. Tilda Swinton 3. Penélope Cruz 4. Anne Hathaway 5. Alicia Vikander 6. Patricia Arquette 7. Octavia Spencer 8. Lupita Nyong'o 9. Jennifer Hudson 10. Melissa Leo The top two are phenomenal, the next three are wonderful, the next three are very good, #9 won because of a very well-sung song, and I can't with the last one. |

RE: Rank the Last Ten Winners!
Wow, interesting to see how opinions vary on these.
Best Picture 1. The Departed 2. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) 3. Slumdog Millionaire, which has grown on me considerably since 2008 4. 12 Years a Slave 5. The Artist 6. The Hurt Locker 7. Spotlight 8. No Country For Old Men 9. Argo 10. The King's Speech I've seen every BP winner and the top seven are all in my Top 30, so that's a damn impressive group. No Country For Old Men is in my top half, too. The other two are meh but not horrible. Either The Revenant or The Big Short would have been the bottom here, and TBS would have certainly been in my bottom ten of all time. Very happy they went with Spotlight. Best Director 1. Alfonso Cuarón 2. Martin Scorsese 3. Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman) 4. Danny Boyle 5. Ang Lee 6. Kathryn Bigelow 7. Ethan and Joel Coen 8. Michel Hazanavicius 9. Alejandro González Iñárritu (Revenant) 10. Tom Hooper This year has the only split in the last decade where I liked the Picture winner better than Director. The top seven or eight, depending on my mood, are pretty great. Best Actor 1. Daniel Day-Lewis (Blood) 2. Sean Penn 3. Jean DuJardin 4. Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) 5. Matthew McConaughey 6. Eddie Redmayne 7. Leonardo DiCaprio 8. Forest Whitaker 9. Jeff Bridges 10. Colin Firth Love the top five. Fine with the other five. Best Actress 1. Natalie Portman 2. Julianne Moore 3. Cate Blanchett 4. Brie Larson 5. Helen Mirren 6. Kate Winslet 7. Meryl Streep 8. Sandra Bullock 9. Marion Cotillard 10. Jennifer Lawrence I need to give Cotillard another shot one of these days. Stellar top five and with the bottom five, I can at least appreciate the woman winning. Best Supporting Actor 1. Heath Ledger 2. Christian Bale 3. Alan Arkin 4. Javier Bardem 5. Jared Leto 6. Christopher Plummer 7. Christoph Waltz (Basterds) 8. J.K. Simmons 9. Mark Rylance 10. Christoph Waltz (Django) The last three are real bummers considering the top six are so great. Ah well. Stallone would have been seventh here, so it's not the end of the world. Best Supporting Actress 1. Jennifer Hudson 2. Anne Hathaway 3. Patricia Arquette 4. Mo'Nique 5. Lupita Nyong'o 6. Penélope Cruz 7. Tilda Swinton 8. Octavia Spencer 9. Alicia Vikander 10. Melissa Leo Stellar top seven. No wonder I was so bummed by the supporting categories this year - they've been so great lately. |

RE: Rank the Last Ten Winners!
How interesting that 5 of the last 10 Supporting Actress winners are women of color, which is 3 more than all other acting categories combined.

RE: Rank the Last Ten Winners!
BEST PICTURE
1. Birdman 2. The King’s Speech 3. Spotlight 4. 12 Years a Slave 5. Argo 6. No Country for Old Men 7. The Hurt Locker 8. Slumdog Millionaire 9. The Departed 10. The Artist None of these are bad. The Artist is just really underwhelming and thin, especially on repeat viewings. The Departed is a perfectly fine adaptation of a movie that didn't need to be remade - that's been stuck in my craw ever since the movie was announced (and I haven't seen it since the theater, so perhaps I'd feel differently today). Slumdog is really good, but basically just an emotional roller coaster. I've always found The Hurt Locker a bit boring, though very well made. I could go either way on 3-6 - I admire them all, though none would make a top 10 list in its year. The top two are personal favorites. The King's Speech is exceptionally well put together, and I do credit Hooper with much of that. Terrific script, too. Birdman is a masterpiece - I think it's one of my all-time favorite films. BEST DIRECTOR 1. Alfonso Cuaron - Gravity 2. Ang Lee - Life of Pi 3. Alejandro Inarritu – Birdman 4. Ethan & Joel Coen - No Country for Old Men 5. Tom Hooper - The King's Speech 6. Kathryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker 7. Alejandro Inarritu – The Revenant 8. Martin Scorsese - The Departed 9. Danny Boyle - Slumdog Millionaire 10. Michel Hazanavicius - The Artist This is really hard to rank. Again, they're all good. BEST ACTOR 1. Daniel Day-Lewis – There Will Be Blood 2. Daniel Day-Lewis – Lincoln 3. Eddie Redmayne – The Theory of Everything 4. Forest Whitaker – The Last King of Scotland 5. Jean Dujardin – The Artist 6. Sean Penn – Milk 7. Matthew McConaughey – Dallas Buyers Club 8. Colin Firth – The King’s Speech 9. Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant Haven't seen Crazy Heart. Day-Lewis is pretty much unmatched here, but among the remaining seven men, I responded most positively to Redmayne. I'll just pretend Leo won for a good performance. BEST ACTRESS 1. Julianne Moore – Still Alice 2. Helen Mirren – The Queen 3. Kate Winslet – The Reader 4. Meryl Streep – The Iron Lady 5. Cate Blanchett – Blue Jasmine 6. Marion Cotillard – La Vie en Rose 7. Jennifer Lawrence – Silver Linings Playbook 8. Natalie Portman – Black Swan 9. Sandra Bullock – The Blind Side 10. Brie Larson – Room This year's winners in Actor and Actress are very underwhelming to me. I don't begrudge Brie Larson her win, but I didn't get much out of it. Love the top three here. |

RE: Rank the Last Ten Winners!
Best Picture
1. No Country for Old Men 2. The Departed 3. The Hurt Locker 4. Slumdog Millionaire 5. Twelve Years a Slave 6. Birdman 7. Argo 8. The King's Speech 9. The Artist This one is quite a good set of winners. I thoroughly enjoy seven of them, don't mind the other two. Best Director 1. Ethan and Joel Coen 2. Ang Lee 3. Kathryn Bigelow 4. Martin Scorsese 5. Danny Boyle 6. Alfonso Cuarón 7. Alejandro González Iñárritu #1 8. Michel Hazanavicius 9. Tom Hooper Not as excited with these winners, but the top five are great. The first two are among my favorites. Best Actor I'll refrain from ranking here until I watch more of the winners. Best Actress 1. Marion Cotillard 2. Cate Blanchett 3. Helen Mirren 4. Julianne Moore 5. Brie Larson 6. Natalie Portman 7. Kate Winslet 8. Sandra Bullock Cotillard is one of my favorite wins alongside Blanchett. Mirren and Moore are great. I'm fine with Larson. Portman and Winslet are ok, but not deserving. Bullock will return her Oscar eventually. Best Supporting Actor 1. Javier Bardem 2. Alan Arkin 3. Christoph Waltz #1 4. Heath Ledger 5. J.K. Simmons 6. Christian Bale 7. Mark Rylance It's so hard for me to get excited by this category. None of these winners excite me, though I like the first three. Though in retrospective, Waltz's acting tends to repeat. Best Supporting Actress 1. Tilda Swinton 2. Patricia Arquette 3. Mo'Nique 4. Lupita Nyong'o 5. Penélope Cruz 6. Octavia Spencer 7. Melissa Leo 8. Jennifer Hudson The top three are amazing. I get so excited when I remember Swinton won for that performance. The other four are decent winners. |

RE: Rank the Last Ten Winners!
Best Picture
1. Moonlight 2. The Departed 3. Parasite 4. Birdman 5. Chicago 6. 12 Years a Slave 7. The Shape of Water 8. Slumdog Millionaire 9. Spotlight 10. The Hurt Locker 11. The Artist 12. No Country For Old Men -------------------------------- 13. A Beautiful Mind 14. Green Book 15. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King 16. Argo 17. Million Dollar Baby 18. The King's Speech -------------------------------- 19. Crash 20. Gladiator The top 12 are excellent picks, with the top four being my actual favorites of their year. The next group I consider middling. I can't imagine sitting through the last two again - and I remember thinking Crash wasn't *that* bad before that disgusting win. Revisited it recently and wow is it terrible. Director 1. Lee #1 2. Cuarón #2 3. Cuarón #1 4. Chazelle 5. Scorsese 6. Bong 7. Iñárritu #1 8. Boyle 9. Soderbergh 10. Del Toro 11. Lee #2 ----------------- 12. Bigelow 13. Coens 14. Hazanavicius 15. Jackson 16. Polanski ----------------- 17. Howard 18. Eastwood 19. Iñárritu #2 20. Hooper The entire top 11 made my all time top 20 for the category. Easily the strongest category of the decade. I just wish Jenkins and Chazelle could have tied in '16. Actress 1. Portman 2. Roberts 3. Moore 4. Stone 5. Larson 6. Theron 7. Blanchett 8. Kidman 9. Colman 10. Mirren ------------- 11. Winslet 12. Witherspoon 13. Zellwegger 14. Bullock 15. Streep 16. Cotillard 17. Berry 18. Swank 19. McDormand 20. Lawrence The top half are excellent, and there was quite a run in the mid-10s. Berry needs a revisit but I'm confident the rest belong in this order. I will say that while I don't love Cotillard's win, she's perhaps a perfect example of what someone can do with an Oscar win, launching her into an incredible last decade. Actor 1. Day-Lewis (Blood) 2. Penn (Milk) 3. Day-Lewis (Lincoln) ------------------- 4. McConaughey 5. Dujardin 6. Redmayne 7. Oldman 8. Whitaker 9. DiCaprio 10. Malek ------------------ 11. Penn (Mystic) 12. Phoenix 13. Brody 14. Bridges 15. Affleck 16. Firth 17. Foxx 18. Washington 19. Hoffman 20. Crowe Love the first three only. Like the second group. After that... they've all been better in other things. Supporting Actress 1. Hudson 2. Zeta-Jones 3. Hathaway 4. Davis 5. Arquette 6. Mo'Nique 7. Dern 8. Nyong'o 9. Cruz 10. Swinton 11. Blanchett 12. Weisz 13. King 14. Janney --------------- 15. Spencer 16. Vikander 17. Harden 18. Leo 19. Connelly 20. Zellwegger Obviously I'm a biased musical lover but wow, didn't realize I liked so many of these. Plus, some from the Aughts have aged much better than I expected. I consider all of the top 14 pretty great wins. Supporting Actor 1. Ledger 2. Ali (Moonlight) 3. Bale 4. Arkin 5. Bardem 6. Del Toro 7. Leto 8. Plummer ---------------- 9. Cooper 10. Ali (Green) 11. Freeman 12. Waltz (Inglorious) 13. Pitt ----------------- 14. Robbins 15. Broadbent 16. Simmons 17. Rylance 18. Rockwell 19. Clooney 20. Waltz (Django) Love the first eight. The next five, deserved. The last group is really not great, and again, these actors have been better in other things. |

RE: Rank the Last Ten Winners!
Why not?
Best Picture 01. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 02. Moonlight 03. 12 Years a Slave 04. Parasite 05. The Hurt Locker 06. Slumdog Millionaire --**-- 07. Birdman 08. No Country for Old Men 09. The Departed --**-- 10. Spotlight 11. Chicago 12. The King’s Speech 13. Million Dollar Baby 14. The Shape of Water 15. The Artist 16. Argo 17. Gladiator 18. A Beautiful Mind --**-- 19. Green Book 20. Crash The first batch of six are films I’m really enthusiastic about. All but maybe 1 would’ve been my number one of the category and remain winners I smile about when recollecting their win. The next three I admire more for context and ambition than overall. In 2006, I felt AMPAS fucked up the nominations deeply, so the Scorsese was the only possible outcome. The other two weren’t my favourites, but their wins are on the plus side. The next nine just kinda exist for me. Wish they hadn’t won, had clear favourites (and often two or three others, in the case of the expanded line-up, I preferred). The last two make me hate cinema. Best Director 01. Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 02. Bong Joon-Ho, Parasite 03. Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker 04. Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain 05. Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire 06. Steven Soderbergh, Traffic 07. Damian Chazelle, La La Land 08. Roman Polanski, The Pianist 09. Martin Scorsese, The Departed --**-- 10. Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity 11. Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men 12. Alejandro Gonzales Innaritu, Birdman --**-- 13. Clint Eastwood, Million Dollar Baby 14. Ang Lee, The Life of Pi 15. Alfonso Cuaron, Roma 16. Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water --**-- 17. Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist 18. Alejandros Gonzales Innaritu, The Revenant 19. Tom Hooper, The King’s Speech 20. Ron Howard, A Beautiful Mind More excellence, fewer true mediocrities. The final group is mostly there because the gap between what they did and the best of their competitors is huge. I imagine David Lynch, Robert Altman and Peter Jackson get together annually and laugh their assess off (they invite Scott every so often out of pity). Best Actress 01. Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine 02. Olivia Coleman, The Favourite 03. Natalie Portman, Black Swan 04. Helen Mirren, The Queen --**-- 05. Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady 06. Brie Larson, Room 07. Emma Stone, La La Land 08. Julianne Moore, Still Alice 09. Nicole Kidman, The Hours 10. Julia Roberts, Erin Brockovich --**-- 11. Frances McDormand, Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri 12. Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line 13. Hilary Swank, Million Dollar Baby 14. Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Lining’s Playbook 15. Charlize Theron, Monster --**-- 16. Halle Berry, Monster’s Ball 17. Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side 18. Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose 19. Renee Zellweger, Judy 20. Kate Winslet, The Reader I know it’s uncool to rate Streep as highly as a do, but whatever. The bottom quintet…. shudder. All have given great performances that I’d be happy to see nominated and/or win. But these weren’t among them Best Actor 01. Daniel Day Lewis, There Will Be Blood 02. Daniel Day Lewis, Lincoln 03. Adrien Brody, The Pianist 04. Sean Penn, Milk 05. Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea 06. Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland 07. Denzel Washington, Training Day --**-- 08. Sean Penn, Mystic River 09. Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything 10. Jamie Foxx, Ray 11. Colin Firth, The King’s Speech --**-- 12. Jean Dujardin, The Artist 13. Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart 14. Russell Crowe, Gladiator 15. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote 16. Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club 17. Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody 18. Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant 19. Joaquin Phoenix, Joker 20. Gary Oldman, The Darkest Hour Nothing outright egregious. Daniel Day-Lewis’ 21st century double could easily grace an all time top ten list. Best Supporting Actor 01. Christopher Plummer, Beginners 02. Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight 03. Chris Cooper, Adaptation 04. Benicio del Toro, Traffic 05. Christian Bale, The Fighter 06. Mahershala Ali, Moonlight 07. Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies --**-- 08. Tim Robbins, Mystic River 09. Morgan Freeman, Million Dollar Baby 10. JK Simmons, Whiplash 11. Jim Broadbet, Iris 12. George Clooney, Syriana 13. Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men 14. Christoph Waltz, Inglorious Basterds 15. Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri/i] 16. Brad Pitt, [i]Once upon a Time…. In Hollywood 17. Mahershala Ali, Green Book 18. Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained 19. Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club 20. Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine AMPAS fucks this category up more than most, but I look at this slate and recall the wit and warmth of Plummer; the savage eloquence of del Toro or the ferocity of Ledger and why I’m disappointed sorta melts away. Best Supporting Actress 01. Lupita N’yongo, 12 Years a Slave 02. Cate Blanchett, The Aviator 03. Viola Davis, Fences --**-- 04. Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener 05. Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk 06. Mo’Nique, Precious 07. Patricia Arquette, Boyhood 08. Marcia Gay Harden, Pollock 09. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Chicago 10. Laura Dern, Marriage Story --**-- 11. Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton 12. Octavia Spencer, The Help 13. Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona 14. Jennifer Connelly, A Beautiful Mind 15. Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl 16. Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls 17. Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables 18. Melissa Leo, The Fighter 19. Allison Janney, I, Tonya --**-- 20. Renee Zellweger, Cold Mountain Fewer peaks, broader valleys. Interesting to see who’s serving their film vs who’s served by their film. Best Original Screenplay 01. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 02. Talk to Her 03. Parasite 04. Gosford Park 05. Her 06. Manchester by the Sea 07. The Hurt Locker 08. Get Out 09. Milk --**-- 10. Lost in Translation 11. Juno 12. Almost Famous 13. Spotlight 14. Birdman --**-- 15. Django Unchained 16. The King’s Speech 17. Little Miss Sunshine --**-- 18. Midnight in Paris 19. Green Book 20. Crash I hated Midnight in Paris. That this shallow toss off earned Allen his third Oscar is disastrous. But let’s talk about the best. Best Adapted Screenplay 01. Moonlight 02. Brokeback Mountain 03. Call Me By Your Name 04. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 05. 12 Years a Slave --**-- 06. The Pianist 07. No Country for Old Men 08. Traffic 09. Slumdog Millionaire 10. The Departed 11. Sideways 12. BlacKkKlansman --**-- 13. The Social Network --**-- 14. The Big Short 15. Precious 16. The Descendants 17. Argo 18. Jojo Rabbit --**-- 19. The Imitation Game 20. A Beautiful Mind Clearly more GLBTQ films need to win Oscars. Films that are scared of their subject should not. |
