Are we going to reach a point where a WR becomes humanly impossible to beat? I find this this idea really interesting and thought-provoking. Science doesn't have a conclusive answer, but there are clearly limits that are just impossible to trespass for the human body, so it is conceivable that at some point we'll end up with, say...a 100 meters WR that is humanly impossible to beat. Arguably the one set by Flo already is.

Is Flo's the oldest world record still going?
What Katie Ledecky is doing in swimming - particularly the 800m free - is ridiculous. She has he 11 fastest times ever! No one is beating her WR anytime soon, with the possible exception of herself of course. |

It's one of the oldest, but not the oldest one. The men's discus and hammer throw records are from 1986, and Kratochvílova and Koch still detain their highly, highly dubious (read: aided by doping) 800 and 400 meters WR from 1983 (!!!) and 1985, the former being the oldest still standing WR in track and field. There are a few others, too.

Was doping rampant back then? It looks like the world records right before the current ones weren't all that much slower. Meanwhile the gold medal winning time in the women's 800 for the last Olympics was slower than the world record set in 1976! The same is true for the 400m times. You won't see that in any other sport, where current generations are slower than those 40 years ago. Wow.
