Oscars 2018
Yeah, I know it's only been a week. But I do think there are at least three possible Oscar contenders out now.
The LEGO Batman Movie is the obvious one. Are there enough people in the Academy who felt bad about the first LEGO Movie being ignored that they will definitely nominate this one? I don't know. Plus this could split votes with The LEGO Ninjago Movie to be released later this year and we could be all LEGO'd out by then. That said, Animated Feature is also a possibility with this one and "Friends Are Family" would make a fun Original Song nominee. There are two very un-Oscar-y genre pictures out right now that could possibly Mad Max: Fury Road their way into some above-the-line nominations: Logan and Get Out. Both are getting rave reviews (the latter getting a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes with the only dissenter being Armond White). The early release date could be an advantage so more Academy members will be enticed to check them out, let their experience with them stew a bit and allow them to get over their genre bias. It worked for The Silence of the Lambs. Well, we still don't know what's gonna happen the rest of the year but for now, I think between these two, Get Out might squeak in an Original Screenplay nomination and that's it. |

RE: Oscars 2018
I hope someone will be working with Jordan Peele to position Get Out come Oscar season. I don't think it would go beyond Original Screenplay, but voters will need a reminder if it's even gonna land there.

It should've been a summer release.

Variety excitedly speculating about "The Disaster Artist".
http://www.variety.com/2017/film/news/ja...07656/amp/ Nah, 90th year and they recognise this!? Will be quietly pushed away under an avalanche of Oscarbait and genuine contenders come Telluride. |

RE: Oscars 2018
I could see it getting in at the Globes' Musical/Comedy categories.

The Lost City of Z was so, so good. And I'm saying that as someone who doesn't usually like James Gray (terrific work here), never seems on board with Sienna Miller (she was nomination worthy) and really doesn't care for epics (this wipes the floor with most of them).

New Oscar rules.
Don't expect another OJ: Made in America to triumph in the Documentary Feature race again. |

I was thinking Five Came Back was going to be a frontrunner. Guess not.

RE: Oscars 2018
Opening up the Best Animated Feature nominations to all the Academy is the one that worries me the most. The move was obviously a response to The LEGO Movie's snub the other year but the move was could also make nominations for smaller, artier, foreign animated films next to impossible unless there's a huge critical push behind them while super popular movies that have good-but-not-great reviews now have a leg up. That means Cars 3 actually has a shot at making it this year if it's a hit.

RE: Oscars 2018
Kris Tapley is hesitant as to what the implications are for smaller animated films and the studios that make them.
http://variety.com/2017/film/in-contenti...202026484/ The date of next year's Oscars will be Sunday 4th March 2018 so not to compete with the um, closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics? http://variety.com/2017/film/news/oscars...202022519/ Felt "O.J.: Made in America" being allowed to compete was a bit of a cheat. The composers rule seems fair. |
