2015 Grammys thread (held in 2016)
Even though the latest awards were held just a few weeks ago, we're already 5 months into the current Grammy year. Some of the contenders:
Album of the Year 1989 - Taylor Swift Black Messiah - D'Angelo If You're Reading This It's Too Late - Drake (not sure he's promoting it, though) Kendrick Lamar Mark Ronson if the album has another hit *This category is really weak on favorites at this point, which could help some lesser known acts get in. Record of the Year "Uptown Funk!" - Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars (the favorite, no?) "Blank Space" - Taylor Swift "FourFive Seconds" - Rihanna, Kanye West, Paul McCartney "Thinking Out Loud" - Ed Sheeran "Centuries" - Fall Out Boy (could get the rock spot, but is it eligible?) Song of the Year "Uptown Funk" "Blank Space" "FourFive Seconds" "Thinking Out Loud" (Ed might finally win one, even if this is lazily written) "Glory" |

I still think the Grammy eligiblity dates are ridiculous. A song/album could be a year and a half old before it wins a Grammy, which seems silly to me.
But I hope 1989 does well. Another strong album from Swift, although I still prefer Red. |

Well, what really needs to happen is for the voting process to be streamlined. The eligibility dates don't matter if there's 2+ months between the end of eligibility and nominations, and then if there is another 2 months between nominations and the awards show. I can somewhat get the lag between the end of eligibility and nominations because there is so much eligible music and they make an effort to determine category placement. I don't get at all where there needs to be 2 months between nominations and the awards show. It probably has to do with college football playoffs, the Super Bowl, Golden Globes, etc. It also doesn't help that labels often release their big albums during the holidays (i.e. right after the eligibility year ends). Since those are often major Grammy contenders, they end up being in contention over a year after release.
To me the best time line is having eligibility be a calendar year. They would then announce nominees in early February and winners in early March. Of course, then we'd have even more major releases late in the year like happens with film. |

I'd add Black Messiah by D'Angelo to the Album of the Year shortlist.

Yup. Tophermac and I were discussing it and we think he will be a strong bet to make the final five.

"Black Messiah" should hold on long enough to be remembered. D'Angelo is one of those artists who breeds respect in the industry and NARAS likes him. He did get into AOTY for "Voodoo".

I don't know how I forgot that album considering I love it. LOL! I will add it to the list.
mahogany soul - He didn't get in AOTY for Voodoo. He won R&B Album (and R&B Male) but was not in AOTY. In fact, that year was an all white male AOTY line-up (Beck, Eminem, Radiohead, Paul Simon, and winners Steely Dan). |

And now Kendrick Lamar enters the conversation. His new one has a 95 at metacritic and will easily debut #1.

Is "Glory" eligible for song/record, because that seems like it would be an easy get.
