RE: Oscars 2022
Maybe it would be better if the the Academy broke away from ABC and made the show pay-per-view on Oscars.org. In addition to accepting credit and debit cards, they could sell gift cards that people could by with cash in stores, or even from vending machines. These gift-card sales could be used to promote the telecast. Then, after the live telecast, they could sell the video of the show.

RE: Oscars 2022
A superb discussion between Nick David and Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience that really touches on a lot.

RE: Oscars 2022
ACTOR:
Javier Bardem - I'd predict it but wouldn't wager on it. Benedict Cumberbatch - I'd wager on it, but there is something about the speed at which he became an also-ran AND the Marvelization of cinema that makes me wonder. Andrew Garfield - I'd predict it but wouldn't wager on it. Will Smith - Nope. Denzel Washington - I'm very confident he'll be back. I actually wonder if he'll eventually eclipse Nicholson's record for an actor. Streep's is obviously too far. ACTRESS: Jessica Chastain - More mixed. I should predict it, but there's something about her taste in projects that makes me wonder. Olivia Colman - Yes and I'll echo that she is someone who can win again. That she's entered the winner's conversation twice and if she had lost in 2018, she would have won in 2020 (imo) Penelope Cruz - More mixed, but leaning no Nicole Kidman - Probably, but I don't think she'll win again Kristen Stewart - More mixed, but leaning yes SUPPORTING ACTOR Ciaran Hinds - No Troy Kotsur - No Jesse Plemons - No JK Simmons - Maybe Kodi Smit-McPhee - No SUPPORTING ACTRESS Jessie Buckley - Yes, with confidence Ariana DeBose - Yes, with confidence Judi Dench - No. Kirsten Dunst - No. Aunjanue Ellis - Yes DIRECTOR Kenneth Branagh - Nope. Ryusuke Hamaguchi - Nope. Paul Thomas Anderson - Yes. Jane Campion - Nope. Steven Spielberg - Yes. |

RE: Oscars 2022
Highlighting the discrepancy between nominations and awards, this is the first Oscars since those awarded for the films of 1931-1932 - when Grand Hotel won - where no more than one film with four or more nominations won more than one award.

RE: Oscars 2022
I finally watched the whole show on abc.com as I dropped cable and they did not unlock the show for those who do not have a cable provider to sign into until a week after the live broadcast. What I have to add is that, as I suspected, the time taken away from awarding all the categories live mostly meant that time being filled by lame attempts at humor from the hosts and presenters. Even without the Will Smith slap, I found this to be one of the worst Oscar productions.

RE: Oscars 2022
They always do comedy bits though. I think the Twitter shit was what added most of the unnecessary time.

RE: Oscars 2022
AMPAS just banned Will Smith from all Academy events, including the Oscars, for the next ten years. He can still be nominated/win but he cannot attend.
