Dependent on if she thinks individually she has a cushion for a potential fall or not. She's in the top qualifying group so she starts on vault. Her thought process was probably that the team had enough of a cushion to absorb a potential fall in the team final but maybe she doesn't think that anymore either. The vault final makes the most sense, because she has the other vault to cushion her score a bit, but I understand not wanting to do it without a warm-up. She said she'd do it there if she's within the last four competitiors because she'd be able to do it in the warm-up gym while the first four are going...but I don't think the random draw for that will be announced until after TF and AA finals. Maybe she won't do it at all...she needs to land it in a Worlds or Olympics to get it in the COP named after her. Also of note is that Carey submitted the triple twisting double layout which, if she does it, will be the hardest skill in the entire COP, valued preliminarily at a K. Obviously her only change is in EFs.

Hold up. So, some competitors get a warm-up for the event while others do not? That doesn't seem fair.

I watched the video of Hidilyn Diaz's winning lift and it was, along with her reaction, why I keep coming back to watch the Olympics. I also read that she and other athletes called out the Philippine government for not supporting their Olympians financially (she had to go her Instagram to ask private sponsors to help her out). The government responded by calling her a communist.

So yeah, awesome victory for Diaz (that it's the first EVER gold medal for the Philippines makes it so much sweeter) and hopefully it sparks some type of change for the athletes in the country.

I just watched the men's team final, and it was really competitive and terrific. However, I hate this COP; it robs many of the routines of any individuality. So many of the routines on all the apparatuses look the same, give or take a Hashimoto on high bar.

Once again, Sam Mikulak bombs in a major competition, dropping the US to fifth because of his floor routine, which was the US's last rotation. There was no chance they'd medal, but they would've finished fourth otherwise.

Everybody gets to warm-up in the practice gym. Nobody gets a one-touch warm-up on the podium apparatus for event finals (which is why Biles doesn't want to do it there). If she vaults 5th through 8th, she can be in the practice gym longer as she doesn't need to be on the podium yet.

Not having a touch warmup “is a little bit crazy to me because we are throwing some very high-level skills and it is dangerous,” Biles said earlier this year. “But I probably wouldn’t do [the Yurchenko double pike] for an event final unless I was later in the lineup, just so we could go to the back [gym] and warm that up.”

Yep. The fact that this victory is a fuck you to the Duterte administration makes it so much sweeter!

Oh my goodness, Diaz's gold was so delightful! Same with Duffy's triathlon gold for Bermuda!

I don't love the Russian gold and silver in the men's 100m backstroke, but McKeown's gold in the women's 100m backstroke was sensational. The Aussie women are not underperforming this Olympics!

Lydia Jacoby, though – incredible!! What a crazy, fantastic race! I was getting a bit sick of NBC playing up Lilly King's competitiveness, but I have to give King credit for her genuinely excited reaction to Jacoby's win.

It doesn't seem like our swimmers are winning quiiiiiiite as much as has been typical of late, but a lot of that must be due to Phelps finally retiring.

I am THRILLED that Tom Daley finally won a gold medal, and that platform synchro competition was fabulously competitive.

I have to give the Russian men all credit for a truly terrific competition in the MAG team final; they were so consistent, aside from two OOBs on floor. Japan would've won had they not underperformed on parallel bars, but Russia really deserved it. Has the way execution scores are configured changed? It seems like they're, on average, a LOT lower than they've been in previous Olympics, but maybe I'm misremembering.
