I'm watching the slalom right now, and the way the announcers are talking about Shiffrin, you'd think she'd flown off the course and been decapitated by a piece of rebar in front of the entire world. Like, this is ridiculous. She just skied off the damn course – it's not the end of the world. It does seem like the shitty quality of the manmade snow has been messing with a number of skiers, though.

From CBC: "Four ROC athletes, including Kamila Valieva, pairs dancers Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov, and Mark Kondratiuk, did not appear at their practice sessions on Wednesday. It was not clear why they had not trained."

Yes, Mishina and Galliamov were referred to as "pairs dancers." WTF CBC. It sounds like it could be a mountain out of a molehill. It also sounds like they might have tested positive for COVID and competed anyway. The ROC women's hockey team also competed under a similar cloud against Canada and Finland, to the point where both those teams wore masks when playing against ROC.

Doubt the IOC will do anything, though.

ETA: The Guardian is reporting it's for testing positive for a non-performance enhancing substance.

I think it's a big deal because the IOC has been referring to it, as you said, as an "ongoing legal issue."

What I THINK is happening is that an ROC skater who competed in the team event has tested positive for a banned substance and they are dealing with whether to disqualify the full participatory ROC team or, since every round was different and it wasn't a relay like in swimming or track, nullify that individual/pairs scores and re-do the scoring based on that. Here's when it gets interesting. Canada in 4th place is 19 points behind the lead. If ROC is completely DQed - or if any event OTHER THAN MEN'S is nullified - Canada moves up to bronze because ROC loses 20 points. However, if it's Kondratyuk (absolutely no speculation that it is, this is just math) and they just remove his scores, ROC still wins the bronze taking the two 0s. To complicate it even further, if Mishina/Galliamov are at fault, Japan wins the pairs and that gives them the gold over the US. Of course, completely DQing the team gives the US the gold and so does almost every other permutation...almost.

There was also speculation that it was a faked negative Covid test (people seem to think Galliamov has Covid) but now that it seems to be "non-performance enhancing," I think someone just did cocaine or something???

Oh and Shiffrin didn't choke. She can't ski at an Olympics without her father there watching her. And there's no way to practice or train for that until you're at the Olympics and your father isn't actually there. Like there wasn't a way for Biles to practice or train for going to an event where she was molested the last time she was there. We're all humans.

No statement from the ISU or IOC until tomorrow but...let's assume hypothetically all the hearsay is correct...

Valieva tested positive for a non-PED banned substance BEFORE the Games. Which means she shouldn't have been allowed to compete here at all. But she is 15 and the penalties are different for athletes under 16, plus I think we are going to find out Eteri gave her "cough medicine" with diuretics or something and she had no idea what was in it. This poor scapegoated kid. I don't know what they will do now. It doesn't appear she failed a current test but if she technically shouldn't be here based on a suspension that should be backdated, but she didn't know she was taking anything because she's being force-fed, what do we do? This is HEARTBREAKING. She has all the tools to be a groundbreaking champion, she would win without any extra help and if something happened and she melted down...Eteri also coaches the presumptive second and third place athletes. What's the fucking point?
