Raves for Tar. Sounds like Blanchett is doing top tier work, and glad to have Todd Field back.

RE: Fall Festivals 2022
Round-up on what's been screened so far based on buzz:
White Noise - Mixed positive. Not enough for a Best Picture play since it's too weird to overcome that. Adam Driver gets excellent notices. Perhaps an outside chance for Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. TÁR - Across the board raves. Cate Blanchett seems to be a lock for a nomination, maybe even a third win. Film itself may get Picture, Director and Screenplay too. Bardo - Mixed negative. The people who hate it REALLY hate it. Some praise the technical elements and ambition. Maybe wins are out of the question but the Academy does love Inarittu and mixed reviews sometimes doesn't stop them from nominating things that they like so don't count this out for nominations yet. Bones and All - Positive. But not positive enough to overcome genre bias since this is a horror movie about cannibalism so probably not an awards player outside of maybe Adapted Screenplay if the field is weak. Women Talking - Raves. The entire cast is being praised as well as Sarah Polley's script and direction. Possible Picture, Director, maybe two Supporting Actresses, Supporting Actor for Ben Whishaw. Could even win Adapted Screenplay. Empire of Light - Positive. Olivia Colman's getting raves again so she's likely getting in. Picture not out of the question. Micheal Ward is also possible as well as the Cinematography and the Score. The Whale - Positive. Raves for Brendan Fraser. He's most likely in. Will also get in Makeup & Hairstyling. Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay not out of the question. Hong Chau, Sadie Sink and Samantha Morton could all contend for Supporting Actress. The Banshees of Inisherin - Raves. Some say it's Martin McDonagh's best. Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon could all contend for acting nominations. McDonagh's gonna get another screenplay nomination. Don't Worry Darling - Mixed. Critics praise Florence Pugh and technical ambition but criticizes the script. So count this one out. The Son - Mixed. Hugh Jackman universally praised....but that's it. He's in but count this out for everything else. They say it's a step back from The Father. |

RE: Fall Festivals 2022
I think Fraser is poised for a Mirren-like sweep - starts in Venice and just steamrolls everything in its path. It's already a very baity role + his comeback narrative + legitimately glowing reviews. I expect to have issues with the movie across the board but he truly deserves everything good after all that's happened to him.

RE: Fall Festivals 2022
I don’t know. I feel like the comeback narrative seems like a great way to land a nomination (Tarantino and Aronofsky, in particular, have a knack for bringing people back to the conversation). But, I always feel like the comeback stories result in, at best, second place.
Travolta, Forster, Rourke/Tomei, Burstyn all come to mind. Rourke and Burstyn felt like they had a real shot, but it all feels like “welcome back, here’s your nomination, now let’s see what you do with this second shot.” I like Fraser a lot. There’s something about him that seems so amiable. (Without having seen the film/performance, I don’t have much to go off of beyond wanting to like it.) I’ve just grown to think that we overvalue the comeback story when it comes to the actual win. |

RE: Fall Festivals 2022
I suspect that Fraser is also a little more popular in Hollywood then his recent output would suggest. I also don't think anyone else is really going to work harder than he is on the campaign trail.

RE: Fall Festivals 2022
Oh I made a point to single out the role itself and the quality of his work in my original post because fundamentally I agree - a comeback narrative by itself isn't enough (and honestly, neither is an overdue one anymore). I think the difference there is that Rourke and Burstyn were always just a half step behind the people who ended up beating them. If Fraser starts dominating critics awards early on, to me that would signal that he isn't only riding on the strenght of his comeback but that the performance itself is also a major vehicle.
