Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close has far more of an Oscar pedigree than Sound of Freedom: Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Stephen Daldry, Scott Rudin and it’s based on a popular book by a well-known author. There is no comparison.

Fucking John Williams and Diane Warren. Yes, there is a song about flaming hot cheetos nominated for an Oscar.
No "Still" or "American Symphony" in Documentary is surprising. No Gerwig or Robbie, but Ferrera gets in. No "Killers" in Adapted Screenplay! Melton and Moore both got the boot. I know the majority were predicting that, but the Academy will never "get" Haynes. I am shocked it got in Screenplay. Bening and Foster really did it. I am really happy for Triet and "Anatomy" as a whole. Both Lead Acting categories match SAG 5/5. I am really glad that Cooper and Mulligan got in. I have a major hard-on for Cooper, I know it, but the way he has been treated this awards season and the reaction to his movie have been ridiculous, IMO. Fucking "Oppenheimer" with 13 nominations. A 3-hour movie that is 2 1/2 hours too long. Jesus. |

Acceptance is the answer to all our prayers! I think he's brought all of this on himself through his incredible vanity and self-aggrandizement without the talent to back it up. He's probably obsessing over his Director snub. I laughed when Ferrera got nominated. Supporting Actress is a shitshow this year (and weak, in my opinion), so I suppose that's where the mild surprise was always going to happen. It didn't matter who got that fifth spot, though, because Randolph is a lock. When Bening and Hüller scored in Actress, I said, "Margot Robbie didn't make it." And then, Mulligan and Stone appeared, and that was that. I would've nominated Robbie over both Mulligan and Gladstone, but Robbie was never going to win, so whatever. I had similar thoughts about Gerwig when Triet got into Director. And not one but two foreign film directors nominated! Colman Domingo is only the second openly gay man nominated for Best Actor for playing a gay character. That's pretty damning of the industry as a whole, and it's cool it happened. I just wish it had happened for a better film and performance (Actor is weak, though, so whatever, I'd rather have the history). |

I know that Scorsese becomes the oldest nominee for Director and that Williams is the most nodded living person for the Oscars, but what other records are there?
I did not know that it has been nearly 30 years since Foster's last nomination. Wow! |

The discourse over Barbie being snubbed is really bothersome to me.
How can Robbie being snubbed in Actress be sexist (as many have claimed) when the category is all women? And I've seen a lot of "All male nominee" comments about Director even though a woman was nominated! Additionally, Robbie was nominated as a producer and Gerwig was nominated for writing, so neither was completely shut out. Hell, Gerwig got in Screenplay over Scorcese! The work Robbie did to get the film made is literally acknowledged by her nomination as a producer. The whole bit about them nominating Gosling but not Robbie is also a bit lame, too, because those are obviously very different categories. Actress was stacked, and you can argue there were at least 4-5 deserving women who were left out (Robbie, Portman, Lee, Barrio, maybe Ellis-Taylor). The only other real contender for Supporting Actor was Charles Melton. There was an LA Times piece that literally belittled Lily Gladstone's role that represents the genocide of indigenous people as "barely survived becoming the next victim in a mass murder plot." I get people being annoyed or whatever, but they can at least be reasonable (and know what they are talking about). |

I don't doubt that some of the dialogue around the snubs is awful, though that is true on both sides. I'm particularly tired of Triet getting in being used as an argument along the lines of "We nominated a woman!" I was thrilled for Triet, who put out a fantastic film, but it's not as if all directors who happen to be women play on a team.
Barbie was a massive global blockbuster that, even if deemed "Adapted," was entirely created by Gerwig and Baumbach's imaginations, given that you could take the story almost anywhere. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Gerwig is the only solo female director who has ever had the top grossing film of her year (Frozen was co-directed by a woman). Sticking with the solo director theme (though she helped co-direct one film previously), she is the only director in history who has had her first three solo projects nominated for Best Picture. Given that, it's especially odd that she only has one Director nomination between them. Lady Bird did not win any of its categories; Little Women only won for Costumes. Both did well at the box office, IIRC. It's also extremely rare for the biggest hit of the year to have a solo female lead. (You could argue Ken is co-lead, but I believe he's correctly listed as supporting.) The last time this happened was The Hunger Games sequel; before that, you have to go back to Sound of Music in 1965. All of this is true even though corners of the internet, namely right-wing men and their platforms, did everything they could to belittle the film and tarnish its critical success, to no avail. (I want to say it dropped from md-90s to high-80s on RT, and the impact on other outlets was probably similar.) The theme of the film shows that, in Barbie Land, displacing the Kens was hurtful, and the clear analogy was that the real would has done the same thing to women. It's hard not to bring that into the conversation. It was also openly and vocally dismissed by Oliver Stone without seeing it (who has since apologized, but only because the movie was so highly praised) in a manner that felt similar to male voters openly stating they wouldn't bother to watch Little Women a few years ago because of its title. That is a well known American work of literature with an acclaimed adaptation. My point is this movie was a phenomenon that was bound to test equality with the Academy, and speculation started as soon as it was a hit that the two ladies might get snubbed. There are other factors - for instance, the Directors branch often undervalues huge hits, something this year's frontrunner Christopher Nolan knows all too well. (I guess Gerwig will have to figure out her WWII movie so they can eventually play catch up, though I'm saying that as an Oppenherimer fan.) It would be clear that any film breaking nomination records at the Critics Choice not getting in for its lead AND director feels undervalued. None of the hate against other nominees is acceptable at all, and I'm glad Gosling was clear about that in his statement. The Academy has undervalued women, anyone who isn't white and LGBT folks since its existence though. This kind of bias does feel like same song, different verse. |
