Wish the Laurie Metcalf/David Suchet revival that played London a couple of years ago had been able to transfer. It was reportedly excellent. But Lange's performance in the London revival around 2000 was her most (only?) widely-acclaimed stage performance.

Danielle Brooks will make her Broadway debut as Sophia in the revival of "The Color Purple".

Why is this being revived so soon?

The Color Purple seemed to carry with it a stench of failure, even though it recouped and made a decent profit on Broadway. It gained a new life with a very successful national tour, followed by two non-equity tours, followed by what was reportedly a significant re-imagining by John Doyle in a London production. The Doyle revival, which got raves in London, is the one coming to Broadway. I believe Doyle cut around thirty minutes from the original show and focused it in more closely on the Celie character. I recall reading that the long number that opens the second-act was cut down significantly.

Laurie Metcalf has replaced Elizabeth Marvel in this fall's Broadway staging of Misery, opposite Bruce Willis.
