RE: Random books thread
I've been able to read a few books over the past couple of months....
A Little Life was beyond devastating. I've never had a book affect me the way that one did, I was literally depressed for a couple of days after finishing. I had borrowed it from the library, but made sure to buy my own copy. Stephen King's Misery is great. I've read so much of King's work, so it's odd I hadn't managed to get around to this one a long time ago. Currently reading The Art of Fielding. I bought it years ago, and I'm trying to read through all of the books I own but never actually read. So far it's.....okay. It features characters that I don't quite believe, speaking in manners I don't find all that realistic. |

RE: Random books thread
Did you know Evenlyn Waugh is, according to time, one of the most read female writers in college? Did Lost in Translation teach you nothing, Time? |

RE: Random books thread
I don't know if I should post this in the Books section or Theater section but the script for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been released. What did everyone think of it? I haven't finished it yet, FYI.
But...SPOILERS: I love the fact that Albus Potter (Harry Potter's middle child) is a SLYTHERIN! (I guess it's not coincidence his initials spell ASP.) |

RE: Random books thread
Looks like Paul Beatty will make history in little over an hour's time as the first US author to win the Man Booker Prize if my sources are correct which suggest that the winner is no way decided on the night.
Hope they're wrong though...had my money on Madeleine Thien. |

RE: Random books thread
So I've been looking for some good books about politics/politicians (even before the election, I swear). I have seen a lot of Doris Kearns Goodwin, obviously. But I read she was accused of some plagiarism. So....was that just a minor thing, or should it put me off of her books? They mostly seem very well-received, of course.

RE: Random books thread
I just read the "March" trilogy by U.S. Congressman John Lewis and Andrew Aydin with illustrations by Nate Powell. I had heard of it, but after teaching civil disobedience and "Selma," I read it. It is truly an amazing read.

RE: Random books thread
I just finished Jeannette Walls' masterpiece, "The Glass Castle." It really was a book that I could not put down and so hauntingly and beautifully captured homelessness and the many different aspects that go into it. The movie is going to be a TRAINWRECK.

RE: Random books thread
George Saunders's "Lincoln in the Bardo" wins this year's Man Booker Prize and he becomes the second American author in a row to win the award.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/10/...aordinary/ There was a fear that US fiction would dominate the prize with Commonwealth, Irish & Zimbabwean works getting lost in the process and though it's only a small sample, it may become more true over the years. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...win-booker |

RE: Random books thread
I am through with Pt. 1 of Call Me By Your Name, and it has been a long time since I have read something this in-tune with sexuality and sensuality. It is jarring and a masterpiece thus far.
