Random TV Thoughts
I guess I'll be the person to start this thread on the new site.
I don't know if anyone here has ever seen Judge Judy, but I found out some interesting info on it today. I was called for jury duty today. A judge came into the waiting room to explain to us that all of today's cases had just been settled out of court, so we could leave. Before we left, he took a few minutes to discuss the jury system with us. He said that if Judge Judy acted the way she does on TV in an actual court of law, she wouldn't last two days before she was thrown off the bench. He didn't go into details why, but I presume it is the way she berates people before the bench. He said the original People's Court Judge Wapner was a more accurate representation. I suspected this about Judge Judy, but, this was my first official confirmation. |

RE: Random TV Thoughts
Well, she's technically arbitration. I'm surprised The Good Wife hasn't riffed on that, though I guess in less overt ways they have.

RE: Random TV Thoughts
So does anyone here actually "hate-watch" a show? I just find that whole concept to be completely weird. I understand sticking with a show that you used to enjoy to see if it turns around; however, to just watch something that you openly hate seems like a complete waste of time.

RE: Random TV Thoughts
On the old board we recently talked about Roseanne after I watched "Wait Til Your Father Gets Home." I just came across this great article about the episode/show:

RE: Random TV Thoughts
Richard Dreyfuss will portray Bernie Madoff in an ABC miniseries titled, well, Madoff. (Instant Emmy nom.)

RE: Random TV Thoughts
Several interesting Emmy rule changes.
I like splitting of Variety Series to Variety-Talk and Variety-Sketch. Not a fan of 30 minutes = Comedy and 1 hour = Drama. |

RE: Random TV Thoughts
Yeah, I think that is pretty close-minded of them. So something like In Treatment would have to compete as a comedy now? That's a pretty stupid rule change.

RE: Random TV Thoughts
From what I've read, 30-minunte shows are by-default placed in Comedy (and hour-long placed by-default in Drama), but producers can formally petition to be placed in the other category. So for a show like In Treatment, which was very much a Drama, the producers would've petitioned for the move, and the panel would've surely granted it. I suspect this change is more about shows like Shameless, Dramas that have some comedic elements, making a category-hop because Comedy nominations seem like an easier "get".
Interesting that Guest Actors now have to appear in less than 50% of the season's episodes. That would've ruled out Uzo Aduba last year, and Robert Morse almost every year he was nominated. |

RE: Random TV Thoughts
I agree about the guest acting slots. That's again, just a way to get nominations because they are an easier "get" as you said. To me a guest is someone in 1 to a few episodes who has an entire character arc, usually in one season, and then goes away. Not season long over multiple seasons in almost every episode. I mean there are exceptions to the series long ones, like say Shelly Winters or Ned Beatty in Roseanne were definitely "guests" even though they appeared over multiple seasons (but it was usually just one episode at a time)
I don't get the mentality to "slum" somewhere just to get nominated, especially the comedy vs drama thing. It makes a little more sense at the Oscars by "slumming" in supporting to get nominated, even though it's still "wrong." |

RE: Random TV Thoughts
With Shameless, though, they had to petition to switch genres. It's not like they just decided to switch one year and it instantly happened. Though the Guest Actor rule change would rule out perennial nominee Joan Cusack, which is fine by me.
I'm more frustrated by Orange is the New Black being forced to go to drama. I think it's deserving of nominations and wins, regardless of categories, but if just this category placement change had been in effect last year, I don't think we'd be seeing nominations for Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox, et. al. Hopefully the drama side will produce nominations for at least some of the shows with minorities competing there (Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, Empire, and now Orange is the New Black), because outside of *maybe* Black-ish landing some nods, this year's comedy categories are going to be very, very white. |
