RE: ATP/WTA 2?: Unchained Meldonium
The library is open. I fundamentally disagree on at least two points.
1) Plenty of people think Sharapova's intent was malicious. WADA used very pointed language in issuing the ban - in fact, the wording of the ban only describes as "unintentional" the fact that Sharapova kept taking the drug after it got banned because she failed to keep up with the list of banned substanced. I mean...come on. How can there be no malice in taking a drug for 10 or so consecutive years against posology and indication under no medical supervision, "forget" to list it in your documentation when it goes under investigation, "forget" to ask for an exemption (because you cannot actually prove you're taking it for its intended purpose), and ignore letters from WADA with updates on banned drugs? She was popping a pill before every match for 10 years when the drug has a treatment course of 4 weeks to allegedly treat angina. Lepchenko and all didn't have nearly as damning a history with the drug as Sharapova does. 2) I don't think Wozniacki or anyone else would've received preferential treatment under the same exact conditions. Not receiving a wildcard isn't a form of punishment - she just isn't being invited to an event that she doesn't have the ranking for following the rationale that she needs to earn her ranking back on her own. Lestienne shouldn't have been invited either, but the FFT's reasoning holds doping offenses to a different standard. We can argue all day that it's a double standard, but the fact is that the FFT made a point to clarify that there are no wildcards coming back from a doping ban. You can at least appreciate that the FFT still went through with this knowing it would affect ticket sales negatively etc. Simon and the WTA only have Sharapova's back insofar as her status as a cash cow can be exploited. Doesn't matter that fan reaction to her comeback on social media has been overwhelmingly negative - they'll keep it up as long as they think she can sell tickets. They wouldn't have done this for #783 Whateverova Cheaterova. Meanwhile, there is no official broadcasting or streaming deal for most WTA events because Simon and the WTA want to start their own streaming service that is never really going to happen, which effectively damages ALL players. OK. |
