RE: ATP/WTA 2?: Unchained Meldonium
First, I want to acknowledge that I was very wrong about how Venus would do given the circumstances off court. (And, I'm totally happy to be wrong.) But, yeah. It was sad to see her deflate after missing her chances with the set points at 5-4. But, if I remember correctly, Muguruza won both of those points, Venus didn't give them away. I am a realist in that I see that the odds of her reaching another slam final are slim. But, hey. She's made it to the finals of two of the three slams this year. If it can happen twice this year, why couldn't it happen once next year?
Also, it was interesting to see an American girl, Claire Liu, win the junior title for the first time since 1992 when Chanda Rubin won it. And, I've read that most pundits consider Liu the top prospect among the upcoming American girls. But, Liu is 5 foot 4. And, it seems like pretty much all of these girls are about that tall. Kayla Day, Sofia Kenin and CiCi Bellis are all under 5'6. Before that, you have Melanie Oudin, Christina McHale and Lauren Davis, who are all under 5'7. (Davis is legit like 5'2.) I think it makes sense that all of them have moved up the lower part of the rankings really quickly because they have the scrambling, tenacious game you need to slog out matches at the challenger level. But, as they get up toward the top 50, they'll run into bigger, taller, more powerful players who can just hit them off the court. So, I'd imagine they'll end up spending the majority of their careers around that #50-31 area because they just don't have the firepower. I know Errani proved that someone that short can fight her way into the top 5 and achieve some pretty incredible results for a while. But, Errani only stayed in the top 10 for about 2 years, then another year and a half in the top 20... and now she's ranked like #96 and even had to qualify into the French - a tournament where she reached the final just four years earlier. So, the prospects of someone that short having a sustained career as a top 10 player are pretty much nil in today's game. I'd place my money on Whitney Osuigwe as the one with the best chance to break out and become a top tenner. She won the French juniors this year, played the girls doubles finals at Wimbledon this morning, and - most importantly - is already 5'9 at 16 years old. |
