RE: Vintage Grammys thoughts
Wikipedia says Brenda Russell was nominated for Pop Female for "Get Here" the year Tracy Chapman won. Her version of "GH" wasn't a pop hit at all, and it barely made the top 40 on the R&B charts. How did it get nominated? She had a big hit with "Piano in the Dark," though. Was the nomination really for that song?
Interestingly Oleta Adams went on to have a big hit - and snag a Grammy nom for Pop Female - a few years later with her version of "Get Here." |

RE: Vintage Grammys thoughts
Could the same not be said for nominees like Bonnie Raitt when Kelly Clarkson won?

Also, if "UF!" loses Record this year, then Bruno Mars would take over as the artists with the most noms in the big 3 without a win (as far as I can tell). Ed Sheeran could move to 0-4 in the big 3 after this year. |

RE: Vintage Grammys thoughts
Actually it just hit me that Max Martin probably has the most noms in the big 3 without a win, though he's different in that he's not the primary artist. But I know he's lost in Song 3 times (and has another nom this year) and Record 3 times (with 2 more nods this year). He's also been part of a few Album noms, though I don't know how many total. Either way, including this year's noms he's in the double digits. If nothing of his wins this year, he'll likely have the record.

I always liked how NARAS embraced TLC in general field. I would have given "Waterfalls" ROTY. I can't argue with "Fanmail" losing with AOTY.

ROTY was an awesome category that year, though "Fantasy" should have been in over "One Sweet Day" and it would have been perfect. "Waterfalls" would have been a deserving winner, for sure. Fanmail has its high points but is inconsistent, but Santana's album isn't any better. AOTY was weak that year, and I would have gone with Dixie Chicks (Fly is the only consistently good album in the bunch). I still think TLC's best album is CrazySexyCool and wish it (or Mary J's My Life or D'Angelo's Brown Sugar) had been in AOTY over Michael Jackson. Any of those happening would make that my favorite AOTY line-up ever. |

Diana Krall should've won in 2000.
