There's no such thing as a career award without any merit component (and the strength of the film in question majorly feeds into that). Close losing for 'The Wife' and Boseman losing for MR'sBB very much show that you can arrive to the ceremony as overdue as any actor will ever be or literally *dead* and if the movie you're in isn't a strong enough vessel, you will still lose to someone else in a more popular and more nominated film (as shown by 'The Father' overperforming with Hopkins winning a bunch of precursors and MR'sBB missing out on a Best Pic nod). JLC was in a movie that ended up being an Oscar juggernaut + voters legitimately found her performance hilarious and noteworthy (at least based on the 15 or so secret ballots I read) + it was her first nomination in an otherwise illustrious career. That's the math right there. Bassett's movie wasn't as strong and that's what ultimately buried her.

Somewhat correct. There was buzz that Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio and for a while, All The Beauty and the Bloodshed could contend for Best Picture.
