RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
Kate Bush is more influential to me than Carly Simon or Lionel Richie, though I'm glad to see Richie there just so it isn't an all-white class (Dionne Warwick should be in too, though).

Nice. I can't say any of those are bad nominees, even if I wish some other people were on there.

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
Jann Wenner has apparently been removed from the Board for this Hall of Fame Foundation after doing a racist interview with the NY Times where he said his book only features white men because women and Black artists aren't intellectual enough about music. Even though this removal is basically performative, good riddance!!
We need to talk about how this man - who founded Rolling Stone - has helped shape how many people view "rock and roll." If the gatekeepers of these platforms that define "rock and roll" and "popular culture" for many engage in systemic racism, it of course extends out in all areas. Hopefully the enlightenment coming with all of this gets people to reconsider their view of "rock and roll" (i.e. it's not just white guys with guitars). |

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
The next set of nominees are out:
Mary J. Blige Mariah Carey Cher Dave Matthews Band Eric B. & Rakim Foreigner Peter Frampton Jane's Addiction Kool & the Gang Lenny Kravitz Oasis Sinéad O'Connor Ozzy Osbourne Sade A Tribe Called Quest I think Mariah and Cher are easily the most influential artists in this group, for whatever that's worth. Oasis and Peter Frampton seem like the weakest nominees to me. I'm rooting for Mariah, Cher, Kool & The Gang, Sade, Foreigner, and Sinead. |

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
Since Ozzy is already in as part of Black Sabbath, I don't fully understand the need for him to also get in as a solo artist but whatever; I like his solo work better than his BS work.
Foreigner is odd to me. Are they really Hall of Fame worthy? I'm a fairly avid music fan and know maybe 4 songs by them. More so, did they change music in any real way? Maybe the addition of gospel choirs to pop music? I don't understand Peter Frampton's inclusion, but he apparently did more than I realize. Dave Matthews Band is a group who has some music I enjoy and they have an avid following, but have they influenced music in any real way? I'm happy for May J Blige, but it's odd to me she got in over Mariah when Mariah debuted earlier than Mary J and was an influence on Mary J. |
