RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
Steve Miller, as much as that rant was publicized, I think was dead on the money as regards the absence of women in the Hall.
I counted the other day: there are 47 women total, with most of those being members of bands or girl groups (i.e. Martha and the Vandellas, The Ronnettes, The Staples Singers, Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads). These are the main inductees, not including Early Influences or the Ahmet Ertigun Award. That's a huge WTF. I mean, Jesus, shouldn't Linda Ronstadt have been in about 10-15 years earlier than 2014? Plus they strung Donna Summer along for what felt like 10 years. And there are countless other examples. A brief list of women who have yet to be inducted, but belong (in my humble opinion): Carole King Diana Ross (solo) Tina Turner (solo) Pat Benatar Cyndi Lauper Cher (solo)/Sonny and Cher Kim Deal (w/ The Pixies) Whitney Houston Janis Ian Olivia Newton-John Tori Amos Kate Bush Janet Jackson Mariah Carey Kylie Minogue (it'll never happen, I know. But she's my girl.) |

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
Oh yeah, in terms of equivalency (i.e. having the same level of influence/success as male acts currently in the HOF), there are plenty of women who should be in. Your list didn't even include country greats like Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, and Loretta Lynn, who should easily be in considering Johnny Cash and Hank Williams are in.
Nina Simone seems like a no-brainer, too. |

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
I totally forgot country artists- my mistake. Dolly, Loretta and Patsy are all extremely viable and important candidates. Frankly, as much as people might laugh, Shania should be too (I know she's not eligible untl 2018(?)) - she's the one who started the entire country-pop revolution in the 90's.
And if we're talking Nina, Roberta Flack should certainly be in there too. And the Pointer Sisters. And I forgot Carly Simon too. |

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
^ Yeah, and mostly it all just reinforces the point re: female artists. The definition of "rock" for purposes of the HOF seems much wider for male artists, though the point is really more that they more readily accept male artists than female artists. It's a travesty that this year featured all male inductees when there are so many worthy female acts.

Janet Jackson and Tupac are nominees for the 2017 list.
Oh my fucking God. |

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
This year's inductees:
Joan Baez Electric Light Orchestra Journey Pearl Jam Tupac Shakur Yes Award for Musical Excellence Nile Rodgers Someone on Slate isn't happy that Joan Baez, ELO and Journey got in this year ahead of Janet Jackson, The Zombies and Kraftwerk. http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2016...ll_of.html You can't please everybody all of the time. |

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
I guess it depends on the criteria, but I don't see where Journey has had a real influence/impact on music. Yes they have a hit that has endured, but what else?
Of course, I'd love the logic of Tupac getting in but not Janet (or Whitney or Mariah). |

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
I'd have thought Whitney Houston might have been fasttracked but no. If Tupac Shakur is any indication then she'll have to wait until 2032.
Mariah Carey suffers from snobbery. I don't think voters will ever quite forgive Janet Jackson for the Super Bowl incident...if Justin Timberlake somehow gets in before she does, it'd prove my point. I can't name any other Journey songs without cheating...I didn't even know they existed before "Glee" and "The Sopranos". |

They have the 1 huge hit, and then some other known songs (Faithfully, Open Arms, Separate Ways, Lights) but you can't say they were influential or left a real imprint on music. |
