RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
DMB has always been reviled by critics, but they've had a super loyal following for 25 years now. They're a more mainstream Grateful Dead/Phish. Personally I like them a lot.

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
Yeah, DMB has a massive following with respect to their live tours. They were through-the-roof huge in my college days in the mid 90s. You couldn’t go to a party between ‘94-‘98 without hearing them. I think they’re talented and I’ve seen them live; however, I am permanently burned out on them since college.

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
With Janet getting in last year and Whitney nominated this time, maybe the bias against 'pop divas' is gone?

Possibly. I’d have to imagine she would be a sure bet, but I would have said the same about Radiohead on their first nomination.

Yeah that Radiohead one still puzzles me. I’m also confused as to why now with Whitney; I would have thought her death would have spurred it at that time. Mariah has been more influential than both Janet and Whitney (and Soundgarden and others), hope she gets in soon. |

Yeah, it wasn't meant as a dig. More about my brain.

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
Why is Soundgarden nominated? They had 1 successful album that rode in on the grunge movement, and that's about it. I could see if Chris Cornell was somehow eligible for being part of Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, and Audioslave, but that's not the deal here.

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
When I first heard the news of these nominations last week I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Mostly because of Soundgarden (among others). I pretty much had the same thoughts you did, MV. I don't have anything against but the band but I'm not sure what warrants a hall of fame nomination. Then I started thinking about who votes on these things (not actual musicians) and it makes a little more sense. These kinds of honors are almost always driven by personal preference with a side of objectiveness.

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
They had three pretty big albums (Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, and Down On The Upside) and we’re very much part of the initial breakout of the Seattle grunge scene. May not have been as huge as Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but were right there with them.
I’m not a die hard fan or anything, but they didn’t just have one album and disappear. |

RE: RNR Hall of Fame discussion
My point being that, for me, the Hall of Fame shouldn't be for fleeting acts. Soundgarden are a blip in the pantheon of rock music.
