RE: Box Office Musings
I find it interesting that it did not surpass the original. I saw everyone talking about it and everyone on Facebook checking into movie theaters saying they were watching it.
However the below article from Box Office Mojo has some good points as to probable reasons why it did not: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4058&p=.htm |

RE: Box Office Musings
Also, Box Office Mojo's updated charts show that Furious 7 current worldwide gross is $1.42 billion. Insane numbers. It will easily leapfrog The Avengers' $1.52 billion and wind up as the 3rd highest grossing film of all time, behind only Avatar and Titanic.
I'm not quite sure if I believe Age of Ultron will pull off a worldwide win anymore. Haha. |

RE: Box Office Musings
Always good to have higher finals, especially since that was a nice increase from the initial projections.

RE: Box Office Musings
I still say it beats Furious by at least 100 million worldwide. More likely 200 - 300. Still insane how big F7 got.

RE: Box Office Musings
So any guesses on surprise hits? While it wouldn't be a "surprise", per se, I think Pitch Perfect 2 has the potential to be a huge smash. The first film did really well, but not blockbuster business. But between its soundtrack and endless TV airings, it has grown a huge fanbase. It'll be interesting to see if it can pull off a huge opening weekend.

I have to say though, the trailer/tv spots aren't doing it for me and I really enjoyed the first.

RE: Box Office Musings
Hmm...I'd say a domestic $40M opening and $120M total sounds about right for Pitch Perfect 2.

RE: Box Office Musings
Age of Ultron fell 59% this weekend to $77.1 million. The drop was a bit more steep than most people were predicting, but it is still the second best second weekend gross ever (there are a lot of weird records that get thrown around these days ). It has surpassed the domestic gross of both Captain America and Thor films at this point. Worldwide, it stands at $875.3 million. It has yet to open in China and Japan, and Disney is expecting big numbers with those two countries. I know it opens in China this week, not sure about Japan.
Hot Pursuit, on the other hand, was a complete bomb. It only earned $13.3 million, and I wouldn't be surprised if it dropped below $13 million when actuals are released. Way, way down on the chart, IFC's widest ever release, The D Train, also bombed with only $469,000. Which is $465 per screen average. It's weird they chose to launch this one so wide (1,000+ theatres) without much in the way of marketing. |
